Captivating Natalie Dormer

Actress Natalie Dormer plays the role of Margaery Tyrell on the HBO series “Game of Thrones.”

Given the short life expectancy of characters on “Game of Thrones,” actress Natalie Dormer made sure she took advantage of the first chance she got to sit on the show’s infamous Iron Throne.

“It was a photo opportunity and I took it,” the British stunner who plays Lady Margaery Tyrell on the hit HBO fantasy says, quick to show a Daily News reporter the photographic evidence of her brief reign — at a San Francisco screening — on her iPhone.

“These are moments in your life to be cherished, they don’t come around that often,” says Dormer. “To be flying around in a ‘Game of Thrones’ jet, to be greeted by massive enthusiasts. So you cherish those experiences because you might end up in a theater being paid two pence a week, doing something you really love just for the passion, that no one comes to see in six months’ time.”

That’s probably not going to be a real concern for the 31-year-old actress anytime soon, as the third season of “Game of Thrones” debuts tonight at 9 p.m.

Dormer, who rose to fame on this side of the pond on Showtime’s “The Tudors,” normally would have stayed away from “another long-skirts-and-horses gig,” as she calls period dramas. The opportunity to saddle up on “Game of Thrones,” though, was too great to turn down. (Even if she auditioned for a completely different role that she declines to reveal.)

And even if that meant occasionally baring more than her soul as Margaery, who this season is a major player in the court of King’s Landing as the intended bride of King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson).

“They put us all up in the same hotel whether we’re (filming) in Croatia or Belfast, so pretty much the person who has a sex scene at the end of the week is the person who’s in the gym or not coming out for dinner,” she says, laughing.

During the six months a year she’s not filming “Game of Thrones,” Dormer has been exercising other acting muscles. She just wrapped work opposite Brad Pitt on the upcoming film, “The Counselor.” It wasn’t that long ago that she was an usher at the London production of “The Lion King” as she made her way through drama school, and here she is being directed by Ridley Scott.

“When Ridley Scott was directing me, I did have a bit of a moment,” says Dormer. “A cinematographer friend of mine had bought me an original 1982 vintage Japanese ‘Blade Runner’ movie poster for my birthday last February … and then six months later, I got the call. So I actually took my poster on set and asked Ridley to sign it. And he was like, ‘This is amazing you have this, how do you have this?’ ”

Now she has an autographed original 1982 vintage Japanese “Blade Runner” movie poster on her study wall.

“Sometimes the universe conspires for you,” she says, “and those are beautiful moments that you cherish.”

HBO’s epic masterpiece Game of Thrones is back for Season 3, with bigger battles, devastating betrayals and more deaths, as everyone fights for control of the Iron Throne.  Now that magic is growing stronger and the dragons have been let loose, there’s no telling who might be in jeopardy or in power next.

At the show’s press day, co-stars Sophie Turner (“Sansa Stark”) and Natalie Dormer (“Margaery Tyrell”) talked about how nice Jack Gleeson is versus how much people hate King Joffrey, how the relationship between Sansa and Margaery will evolve in Season 3, what it was like to work with Diana Rigg (“Olenna”), how Sansa has found her strength after the Battle of Blackwater, what sort of relationship both women will have with Cersei (Lena Headey), how much of the books they’ve read, that the actors get together in Belfast for a read-through of five episodes over two days before each season starts shooting, how they feel like fans of the show themselves, and how much of an effect the success of Game of Thrones has had on them.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Question:  Does it amuse you to see how worked up fans get about Joffrey?

SOPHIE TURNER:  It is funny because people are totally different about Jack [Gleeson], when you talk to them.  It is really kind of amusing, thinking that people really detest him, when he’s the nicest guy, ever.

NATALIE DORMER:  He’s the nicest guy.  He’s stupidly nice.

TURNER:  It’s ridiculous!

DORMER:  And he’s very erudite.  He’s studying at Trinity College in Dublin, at the moment.

TURNER:  He’s a scholar.

DORMER:  He’s doing theology.  He’s off the charts.  So, he’s this really contemplative, erudite, really gorgeous, generous human being, and he plays Joffrey so well.  It’s very disturbing.

Does Margaery realize that Joffrey is crazy?

Mel       November 29, 2012       Neverwhere (2013), News, Projects       No Comments

Natalie, James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch have all signed on to star in a radio version of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere.  This photo was posted on twitter and the interview below is from the Radio Times.

James McAvoy, star of the X-Men movies, heads up the cast, along with Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Natalie Dormer, formerly of BBC3’s supernatural drama The Fades and currently filming Game of Thrones.

Homeland’s David Harewood and his fellow Doctor Who alumni Sophie Okonedo and Brenard Cribbins are joined by Anthony Head, star of Merlin and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as Saruman (and Dracula) himself, Sir Christopher Lee.

Neverwhere is the tale of businessman Richard Mayhew (McAvoy) whose life is turned upside-down when he comes to the aid of a young woman named Door (Dormer). In helping Door, Richard ceases to exist in his own world – London Above – and is transported to the magical parallel universe that lurks beneath it – London Below, where the capital’s landmarks take on new significance.

Knightsbridge is the Night’s Bridge, which demands human life as its toll, while other famous places become characters in themselves. Christopher Lee is the Earl of Earl’s Court, while Benedict Cumberbatch is the mysterious angel Islington and Bernard Cribbins plays another underworld inhabitant, Old Bailey.

Last night, Harewood – who stars as trickster the Marquis de Carabas – posted a photo on Twitter of the cast holding a banner bidding Gaiman “Greetings from London Below!”. Gaiman himself will be a narrator in Neverwhere, but was unable to join the actors for the recording.

Neverwhere began life in 1996 as a six-part BBC2 TV series co-created by Gaiman and Lenny Henry, before being expanded into a novel by Gaiman. It has also inspired a series of graphic novels and a stage play.

The Radio 4 adaptation is expected to air early next year.
